Vege heaven? Na, nirvana.

Ok, ok, a pretty outlandish, outreageous, O.T.T statement. But even in such utterances some truth can be found. My confessional beginneth…

After trying a couple of anonymous Japanese places, it was time to go to some respected vege institutions. Sian and Steve suggested trying the Shakahari Vegetarian Restaurant, just off Lygon Street in Carlton. Although peaceful and quite elegant, I didn’t feel out of place in my cycle shorts. Entrees were served with piquaint sauces and subtle flavours: lentil sausages with mustard sauce. The mains were substantial and plainer, leaving no room for desert.

The next night it was time for Vege Out in the wacky, alternative milleu of Brunswick Street. A bain marie laden with healthy, delicious curries or stir fries. Lots of choice and no waiting around. Chili tofu, dal, …. um, hmmm, umm, ahh, umm. Okay, how about pumpkin curry and greens with black bean sauce for $8.50. I’ll be back. Lots.

And Sunday brunch was at the Soul Food Cafe in Smith Street, Fitzroy. Wooden tables and exposed brick, enormous bowls of salad, sickly rich looking chocoloate cake, and purr of the espresso machine. It was real, wholesome filling kai in a noisy, chaotic atmosphere.

Anyway, I’m beat. I’m exhausted after my first day at Infoxchange – quite a lot to adjust to and learn and names to remember and all that – so it’s an early night.
