A precious taonga

I’ve been humming and haring about whether to upload any photos of our daugther Elsa. Something primal has struck me – I feel very protective of her and I guess I don’t want to her image freely shared willy nilly with strangers. It’s not that I think any harm will come to her (I definitely wouldn’t post a photo if this was likely to be the case). Ultimately I think Elsa should choose if she’s going to be an internet being, not me.
Anyway, my resolve weakened after Joanna gave Elsa a quilt. In the few short months since her birth in September, Joanna has created the work of art pictured behind our little one. I’m really humbled by Joanna’s generosity and thoughtfulness. I’m sure Elsa will be too when she’s older.
The quilt tells a story: the pohutukawa depict trees swaying outside the window here; the nikau represent shelter and security; and the koromiko flower health and healing. On the back of the quilt cheeky piwakawaka cavort – reminding us of play and joy.
Made by hand with love, designed especially for Elsa, it’s a taonga (treasure) which we’ll all cherish.
